In Yokohama, which is the third biggest city of Japan, in the depth of an industrial zone, crowd of teenaged Japanese are cheering and shouting and the 350Z Nissan car drifts at the turn at forty five degree angle.

The smell and smoke of the burnt tires subsides, the gray road shows the criss cross tire marks clearly, which in other words proclaim the rage of the circuit.

This is the drifter’s world, which is a part of the Japanese culture. These youngsters get together to show off and check their talent in driving, display rods that got hot and burn tires.

The skill of cornering, where in, the frontal wheels of the car are pointed against the direction of the corner, thus making the car slant at the corner at nearly 90 degrees to the corner, so as to show the control over skid.

Skidding is being used since a very long time in different car racing like early on Grand Prix and rallying. The credit of making drifting popular goes to Keiichi Tsuchiya who was a young car racer in Japan.

Tsuchiya won many accolades and titles in motor sports in spite of the fact that his license to participate in racing was cancelled early on, in his career. In spite of this, he kept on taking part in the street race and made his drifts a legend.

Tsuchiya is respected the world over for his talent in drifting, even as he has stopped active participation in street sports as well as professional car racing events.

In the movie “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift”, Tsuchiya was asked to perform a cameo as an honor for contributing in the drifting sport.

The Japanese have a craze for drifting and the DI Grand Prix is considered a major event. But the Japanese tradition of street skids has enchanted many car lovers globally and more so, by the video that captured the drifting moments that are being put up on the net by the drifters and their followers.

The loud, heroic and the unruly state of the street drifters have given birth to many comic characters in the books.

Keiichi Tsuchiya holds the post of editorial supervisor in “Initial D” that is based on Touge and drifting. Touge is spelled as Toe-gay which means to bypass, is used  as a style of racing, where  in the drivers use slim, circular mountain paths to check their driving talent as opposed to each other.

The action packed thriller “The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift” took the world by storm when it was released the world over. It had the perfect recipe of a successful movie with lots of stunts involving drifting, hot and coolest assortment of cars. No wonder, The Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift was a super hit movie.

Let us see what were the cars used in the movie Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift.

Through out the movie, we can see the altered cars. A few of them were the Japanese make drift cars that were modified to the fullest, where as a few of them were altered cars of the highest order.

At the beginning the movie shows sturdy American car models such as Viper. But later on, the movie takes you to the scenic beauty of Japan, where in you get you see the most amazing stunts done by the Japanese drift cars.

The most wonderful part of the movie was that in addition to star cast of the movie The Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift, the cars played a vital role in the film.

The lead car in the movie, which left an unforgettable image was RxFD in black and orange which had the body kit of Veilside.

This was the main car in which they traveled and followed other cars as well as were being followed by the others. In the end, it was burnt to ruins.

Another car most used and played a villainous role was the Nissan 350Z black in color, which belonged to the nephew of the Don of the Japan, and the driver’s seat was taken by the girls. However, the car took a beat from Mustang car that was powered by RB26.

Another memorable car was the Mazda Rx8 with a combination of light blue and black color, which was driven by lead actress of the movie Nathalie Kelley, who played the role of a school girl. This car was though driven by girls, it didn’t look one bit a lady’s car. The car looked every bit a car for drifting.

If you are an ardent fan of altered Japanese cars and car drifting, then the movie The Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift movie is a must see movie for you.

Rookie racers of gas powered RC cars used to find it difficult to tune the engine. They won’t have any trouble in starting the engine yet at the end of the run, it was overheated. Once gained experience, they can tune the engine in less than 5 minutes. Adjusting the optimal settings of the car will also be easier.

The Idle Screw

It is always advisable to start with the idle screw. Adjustments must be made so that the car will idle high when we initially dial the engine. Once the temperature of the engine is set, we can adjust the idle slowly to a point where it stalls. After this, we must turn it to one-forth or one-half based on the temperature. When our car stalls often, it is better to increase the idle. While we rectify several other tuning issues, it increasing the idle is only a temperature fix. It will also help us to keep the frustration levels down.

Low-Speed Needle.

If our carburetor has two needles, confusion may occur as to which needle it should be adjusted first. If it has only one needle then it is not a problem as we have to make adjustments only on that. When such type of confusion occurs, low speed needle should be adjusted first because once it is set, high-speed needle can be easily changed. We must always make sure that we keep the low speed needle on the rich side. This helps to keep the combustion chamber cool. Once adjustments have been made in low-speed needle, we should not adjust it again. When the engine stalls, we can tell whether it should be richer or leaner in a matter of just 30 to 60 seconds. The RC car should not get stuck or flame out when we apply a full throttle. It should pull off quickly from a standing start.

Nitro drift car

High-Speed Needle.

Once the adjustments in low-speed needle are done, we should get the power out of RC engine. This is possible with high-speed needle as it adjusts the air to fuel mixture of the engine. This is done at a RPM of about 40% or more. To get the first clue about the tune, it is important to monitor the trail of the smoke. Irrespective of the RPM, we need to have lot of smoke coming out of the engine. If we get a very low amount of smoke, then it means we are running too lean.

Hints, Tips and Tricks

  • To lean out, turn the needle clockwise and to richen the mixture, turn it in anti-clockwise direction.
  • High smoke emitting from the engine implies our tune is rich.
  • After a run, reading the glow plug will tell us about our tune.
  • Turning the engine on the rich side will extend its life.
  • Temperature, pressure of the air and humidity influences the tune. So different settings are required on different days.

Selecting-a-RC-Drifting-car

People are confused when they think about what car can be used for drifting. The answer for this is “you can get a 4 wheel drive tour car and fit drift tires in it”. Drive it and drift. In spite of its full size, a rear WD car is best when used. But this is not true for RC drifting because when the rear wheel drive car is used, it leads to frustration.

A real 4 WD tour car costs over 100 dollars (if it is a good one). To get a better priced 4 WD then find it out in e bay. Many people are attracted towards the RC and it is a hobby for a lot of people. But it is for a while only and then later they auction their stuff. One is benefited a lot from these auctions. There are cars that are sold for 500 dollars but as an entry level drifter you must select a less priced one.

Many people are interested in using a brand new car. There are many packages available for them. Yokohoma is one of the best RC drift cars. Another such is Tamiya. These offer cars for drifting. The fact is that these cars are the basic tour cars which have minimum changes that are made to make them drift specific. You can save money when you use a better motor.

You can also add speed control. The requirements for the better motor and speed control are that you need an electric speed control which handles stress. It should be rated down to 17t. The motor should have torque higher than top speed. The best choice is 27 turn motor. You should buy monster horsepower stock edition which is a fast and tough motor.

Before knowing the remote control cars drifting techniques it is important to know the ground rules. All will be aware of the RC drifting. If any individual is not aware of RC drift then it is sure that they would have bumped into a RC drift car without knowing what to be done or what is maneuvers.

It is important to know the basic things about remote control car drifting before knowing about the various techniques of the remote control drifting car.

Remote control cars needs to be cornered correctly in the curved tracks such as U – shaped ones or S – shaped ones. This helps the remote control drift car to stay in the race. There are different methods involved in the cornering than that of the straight road. One such method of cornering is the remote control car drifting. The rear tires slip on the track than that of rolling.

There are numerous fans for the remote control car drifting. It is a very spectacular site to see the cars on the track. Technically, when you drift it saves time. Drifting is to maintain speed throughout the curve and have faster speed when coming out of the corner.

There are various techniques that the individuals use for remote control car drifting. We are going to discuss some of the popular techniques. These methods help us to get the required results which are desired by you. We cannot guarantee the success because it depends on your ability to master the techniques that you have learned.

Basic Drifting Techniques

We are going to discuss the various techniques used by the driver’s world – wide.

Power Over

The remote control car drifting uses full throttle which will produce steering of significant magnitude which helps them to turn.

Faint Drift

Here you should steer the car out from the track. Then turn the car in an inward direction using the steering.

Swaying Drift

When you drift short, the back or the rear of the car oscillates in the longitudinal direction which gives a sway view.

Kansei Drift

This type of technique is used in high racing speeds. When you move towards the corner with high speed then reduce the supply of gas. This causes over steering in the car. You should balance this by adjusting the steering and gas.

Jump Drift

This jump drift method causes one of the tires to have loose contact with the track. Inside tire (rear end) bounces or jumps to loose contact with track and this generates over steer.

Long Side Drift

In this technique the reverse and steering drifting allows us to put the car side – ways. The car turns in this position.

It is important to practice these steps before trying it out.

Understanding RC Car drift

You must have seen those grand car chases in the movies where cars take swift turns across the corners and slide sideways while doing that. This is called drifting and is a very common phenomenon in contemporary remote control car circuit.

This is being pursued both as a hobby and as a competition. Normally, the RC cars would have required some tweaking for getting the cars ready for drifting. But with this activity becoming more popular, you can now get cars which ready to get drifting on the road.

A four wheel drive remote control car is required for getting the front and rear parts of the RC car to go sideways without loosing control or get into looping. Generally, electric RC cars are preferred as they are light weight.

You will also need some specific tires as drifting is very hard on tires. Hard rubber tires are used as they are suitable for drifting but they are very expensive. Other effective and cheap alternatives have been identified such as use of PVC pipes around the wheel to generate the same effect. This can be done by cutting four pieces of the PVC pipe equal to the size of the wheels and pressing the pieces on the outer surface of the wheel.

The modifications of Suspension can also be made but are generally optional for most of the cars. The new age cars generally have necessary suspension to handle the pressure of the drifting.

Requirements of motor and engine are much more stringent as real drifting is going to take a lot of power out of the engine and the motor. Stock motors are a big no for the activity, as they will not be able to take it. So you will have to get the engine upgraded if you really want to have the fun. The upgrade should ensure that there is a proper balance of speed and torque in the engine.

Your-Secret-to-Success-with

Having got your car ready for the act, its time you yourself get ready for it. So here is what you need to do.

Get on the road and while you are turning, keep your car on high speed. When the tires start loosing traction, steer the car while it is skidding. The front tires will start pulling the front of the car in the same direction. You have to prevent your car from looping. And you will find your RC car really drifting giving you all the fun and the thrill.

Speed-up-your-RC-Car

Remote control cars, although being so small, can achieve really great speeds. This is really an amazing engineering achievement. You must have wondered what actually get these little things to go zipping around so swiftly. These machines may look minuscule but in what ever they do – accelerate, brake or drift – there is a whole world of engineering and mechanics that is operating and state of the art control systems are at work which can be really complex at times. This article is targeted to make you learn how to get your RC car play some ticks and move really fast.

Though most of the remote controlled cars are built almost the same way, it’s not always that all the cars run at the same speeds. Obviously, in car races, some cars pick up more speed than the others. So what exactly makes these cars to be better than others? The secret is a simple upgrade that is known as shims. The shim is fitted in the substantial gap present in the car between the axle pin and the back hub.

Let’s try to understand what actually a shim is. Shim is generally a piece of metal that is generally thin in construction. Sometimes, the shim can be made of wood also. The purpose of placing the shim in a RC car is to prevent the car from dis-balancing and toppling especially when it runs over uneven roads or tracks such as stones, slopes etc. It helps in reducing the car’s sloppiness and increases its balance.

So what do you need to do for fitting a shim in your remote controlled car to get it really zipping around? Firstly, the car needs to be disassembled completely which means that all the parts have to be separated. Therefore, the car will be constructed from the starting with the rear hub to be fitted along with the shim at first, which will then be fitted with the bearing. A very important thing to take care of is that the dimensions of the shim and the ball bearing should match; otherwise the assembly will not work properly. This assembly will reduce the gap present between the axle pin and the ball bearing making your remote controlled car go amazingly fast.

The only problem that may be faced by fitting a shim as directed above is that if the dimension of the shim does not match with the bearing, it will result in binding of the tires of the car. To avoid this problem, just make sure that the shim is cut into the proper size according to the bearing. Use this simple way to ramp up your car speed.

Lets try to learn a new stunt for your car known as heel-toe shifting which is performed in sync with drifting.

Before getting on, let us try to understand what heel-toe shifting actually is:

Heel-and-toe is a technique for driving that is especially enacted in performance driving. It includes using multiple controls such as the accelerator and brake pedals together using the right foot, while the clutch is used as in normal conditions using the left foot. This technique is utilized while braking the car and downshifting it simultaneously in maneuvers such as going around a turn. It also lets drivers to “blip” the throttle that raises the speed of the engine and the lower gear is also engaged smoothly.

Looks interesting but what actually is the importance of this drifting technique?

When you are taking a turn around a corner, you will most probably in a higher gear and will be in high speed as you reach the corner. But when you take the turn, you will break and reduce the speed. Therefore, when you complete the turn and come out of the corner, you will have reduced the speed but will not have changed the gear, which will put the gear out of place. This means that gear will not be correct for proper acceleration to get out from the corner. Also, in case you are drifting, you will not enough power for keeping the tires spinning. If you use the heel-toe technique, the car will remain in the “power band” and you will be able to use all the power during complete maneuver over the corner.

So having understood the use of the technique, we are convinced that heel toe shifting is one thing that is very essential to learn for a driver. And the right time to id is right at the beginning. So that you can get lot of practice of this very important and cool thing. This is in fact important before you learn drifting.

Once you learn both drifting and heel-toe shifting, you will realize that heel toe is really very important for drifting. And you can actually learn the more simple and safe heel toe technique much before you actually go for drifting.

Add-Stunts-to-Your-Car

So just take out your car, go any where (as you don’t need to be really high on speed to try and practice this) and follow these simple steps for heel-toe shifting:

1) Start braking the car as you approach the car

2) Keep the breaks on during the turn

3) Push the clutch in

4) Push the accelerator through one side of your foot to speed up the engine.

5) Lower down the gear and simultaneously, take away the foot from the brake and move completely to the accelerator.

In this article we are going to learn how to drift. Most of the drivers want to learn how to drift. Though it is a complicated trick, everyone likes it. It has one advantage that the car can be made to take a sharp experienced corner without losing speed. This effect will turn the whole car in the corner completely. When the wheels are in horizontal position the body remains parallel. This trick needs a lot of experience. We should consider five essential steps.

Tip 1: You should carefully have a look at the 4 WD remote car videos to know the tricks and techniques properly.
Tip 2: Use Electric remote cars because they are better than nitro especially for the beginners.
Tip 3: You should have smooth tires which are important to learn the drifting.

Tip 4: The transmission of your car must be sealed properly.

Tip 5: it is important to use the low – friction track.

RC-Drifting

RC car drift

You should use four WD when you drift or when you learn how to drift. You can learn how to slide when you learn with this car. It will help you to gain experience. To learn drifting it takes time. You have to learn so much and increase your experience level.

You should make special tires to slide properly which will help you learn the drifting. You can make tires out of PVC and ABS or you can use even rubber tires but it should be wrapped in electrical tape. These are the general factors that are considered in this.

It is a great deal to drift in the dirt and dust that is caused and you should pick the track after the drift. The transmission should be sealed tightly. Don’t fake out the experience. You have to learn the drift.

You should drift in the low – friction track with high powered car may be a nitro car because you should not lose speed in a sticky surface.

One of the amazing pieces of engineering is the glow plug. It is a motion machine that is perpetual. Only fuel is essential for the radio controlled cars to run. With only fuel in its tank, it can even run without spark plugs or electrical ignition.

Understanding the principle behind working of glow plug is very important. Choosing the correct plug is not a tough task.  Actually, these glow plugs are not perpetual motion machines. It requires some 1.5v battery to initiate the glow. Once initiated, it will continue to glow till the engine runs.

Turbo or standard

The plug that works only in the turbo engine is called turbo plug. They do not have the scale fans to blow air into the engine. To create a firm fitting to the engine head, the plug is narrowed at the end. As a result, there is a slight increase in the power.  Turbo plugs are not suitable to be used in standard engines. Only standard plugs are suited.

Temperature rating of the glow plug

It is important to choose the glow plug with the right temperature to suit our engine. If the engine is short of heat, hotter plugs will function better. If the engine radiates a lot of heat, cooler plug is essential. To start the engine, hotter plugs are more convenient. During the run, colder plugs will give a better performance compared to hotter ones.

Performance of glow plugs will be influenced from anything between air temperatures to the height of sea level.  So there is nothing like a wrong or right setup.

Quality over quantity

Whenever we buy a glow plug that is remote controlled, it is always advisable to get glow plugs that are expensive.  This is because it will have a stable tune and heat. It also works longer than cheaper plugs. So rather than getting cheaper plugs often, it is better if we spend only once and get an expensive one.

Choosing-the-Right-Glow-Plu

Nitro car

Reading your glow plug

By inspecting the glow plug, it is easier to find how close we are to a perfect tune. The methods of finding this are simple. If there is a plenty of oil present in the head, it means they are running rich. If the color of glow plug is grey and if there is a small amount of oil, we are spot on with our tune. If the filament of glow plug is bent and if it has very little oil present in it, it is necessary to richen the mixture.

Some general points about glow plugs

  • Fragile filaments should not be touched as it can break the filament and spoil the plug.
  • Good glow plugs should only be used as it protects the engine better.
  • Glow plugs should not be kept in a damp place.  Cool and dry place is suitable for it.
  • Selecting the right glow plug is important.
  • It is also important to keep the engine in tune.
  • It is also not advisable to tighten the plug too much.
  • If nitro detonation occurs, it means we are using the wrong plug. Also, the tune may not be rightly set.
  • A proper glow starter has to be used.
  • It is better to consult other racers for help.
